SAUDADE
Saudade is a womenswear collection informed by the Portuguese concept of saudade, a term that articulates states of longing, absence, nostalgia, and emotional memory. Drawing on personal and cultural narratives, this collection transforms intangible emotion into physical form. Inspired by the artwork The Dance by Paula Rego, with its dreamlike scenes of dancing figures rooted in Portuguese folklore, the designs centre on movement, expressed through flowing silhouettes and dynamic constructions that evoke rhythm, continuity, and emotional release. This sense of motion is offset by sculptural volume, informed by the expansive Valkyries series by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, where exaggerated forms generate presence, protection, and a commanding spatial impact. Structured outerwear and enveloping shapes reflect a duality between vulnerability and strength. A tactile material story combines textured fabrics and handcrafted elements, reinforcing intimacy and depth. The collection was generously supported by TRIWOOL, EcoLã, Burel Factory and JewelBe whose sponsorship contributed to its material development and realisation. Through Saudade, Carolina Sá Couto transforms memory into movement and volume, positioning fashion as a vessel for emotional expression and cultural identity.
